In 2009, two endangered mountain caribou, a pregnant female and calf, were killed by speeding traffic, a big blow for the small Kootenay herd. Mountain Caribou Project members, including Conservation Northwest, have asked the government to reduce speeds along this short section where caribou often congregate, licking salt applied by winter road crews.
