I
n 1988, the Forest Service was clearcutting old-growth forest in Washington
and Oregon at the rate of about two square miles per week. They reached
those virgin stands by punching roads into wild roadless areas. There hadn't
been a wolf, wolverine, or fisher population in Washington for half a century,
and nobody was speaking up for the few lonely grizzly bears roaming the
North Cascades. Since then, we've come a long way.
