Keeping the Northwest wild Fall 2014 3
Comments hold up risky Mazama Mine: Wild NW activists make a difference
In May,
the Forest Service announced that a Canadian min-
ing company was seeking permission to conduct "explor-
atory drilling" for copper near the iconic Goat Mountain in
the upper Methow Valley. If approved, the company would
build new roads, run industrial drills 24/7 and dump toxic
drilling waste within an old-growth preserve and upstream
from endangered steelhead, bull trout and Chinook salmon.
But all that was delayed by the massive public reaction!
In response to our action alert, Conservation NW sup-
porters provided over 400 comments pushing back
against the proposed mine. We're still waiting for
word on the fate of the Mazama Mine, but one thing
is clear: Wild Northwest activists are heard loud and
clear! To sign up for our action alerts and make your
voice heard, please complete the email form on our
website homepage. –Dave Werntz
